The pinning ceremony is one of the most important traditions in nursing education, dating back to the Florence Nightengale School of Nursing in London and in wide use in the US since the early 1900s. The pinning ceremony for RIC School of Nursing graduates was postponed twice this year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, but a third attempt proved to be the charm!
•
After a month of planning, the School of Nursing along with the Student Nursing Association organized a drive-through pinning ceremony in the Fogarty Science parking lot. Faculty members wore gloves and masks as they interacted with the nursing grads, who were accompanied by proud parents, children and others inside their cars.
•
Gabrielle Pommenville and Vanessa Mansi, two RIC seniors who are members of ricstudentnurse, planned the drive-through affair with assistance from faculty. “It’s obviously disappointing to not have a traditional pinning ceremony, but I think this setting was still a good way to recognize the grads for all the work they’ve done in their four years of nursing school,” Gabrielle says. “That’s a big achievement in your life.”
•
Vanessa says it was challenging to ensure that the event would be appropriate for an ever-changing pandemic scenario. “We had to examine what we could and couldn’t do,” she says. “The goal was to make things safe and put nobody in jeopardy.”
•
Pommenville and Mansi are already gearing up to plan the next pinning, which is scheduled for January. Congrats to all the grads! 🎓 🎉 👩🏾‍⚕️ 👨🏻‍⚕️
