As much of life has moved online during the pandemic, so has the creative output of students, faculty and alumni in the visual and performing arts. We begin a series of stories about creativity in the digital space with jackzornado, a RIC student inspired by the "Best Dog in the World."
🎵 🎹 💻
During the pandemic, Jack gave his five-year-old golden Labrador, Oliver, top billing on his extended play (EP) recording titled "Best Dog In The World" (BDITW). The EP was a project Zornado had been working on with his music professors but was forced to do independently after the pandemic's arrival. "The music isn't all about Oliver but speaks to the emotional clarity and honesty I gained after Oliver became part of my family," says Zornado, a 22-year-old Killingly, Connecticut native who is a double major in music and film studies. "I learned a great deal about taking care of something and someone other than myself. The EP is loosely inspired by a lot of things, but Oliver is a big part of it."
🎵 🎹 💻
Aside from working on BDITW, Zornado, primarily a pianist, singer and songwriter, has shared his collection of original compositions on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music and helped friends navigate a new world of expressing their art through virtual means. For Zornado, that's nothing new. "Nobody knows the next time 40 people will be able to sing again in a choir or when people can gather in a stadium to listen to Bruce Springsteen's next performance," Jack says. "While not a replacement for live shows, performing music online has provided a place for artists to share a part of themselves and hope for people to consume what artists are putting out there."
