Although RIC Athletics will not be taking the field for littleeastconf play in the fall, our incoming goanchormen student-athletes are still gearing up for their first year of college and trying to stay ready for action. Caitlin Lopez, for example, is a chsw.2020 grad and intended nursing major who was recruited for the softball team by Coach Brian Claypool (second pic). “When I met with Coach Clay, I committed on the spot,” Caitlin says. “I knew it was where I wanted to be athletically, because it would help me achieve my goals academically.”

Despite not yet being able to join her team in person, Caitlin has continued training with her pitching coach once a week and recently with her travel ball team twice a week. “With gyms closed and not everyone with traditional weights or machines at home, we've needed to become creative. A gallon of water might replace a dumbbell or an extra bag of sand from the winter might become a weight,” says Coach Clay. “At the end of the day, everyone we compete against is facing similar constraints, and the teams that find solutions instead of excuses will be the teams that will be successful when the new season comes.”

In the meantime, coaches are also finding creative ways for teammates to socialize and form bonds. Student-athletes have had the chance to communicate through WhatsApp, texting, Zoom and a chatroom where coaches post announcements and get information out to their team members. “Now with the popularity of the online group meetings, we all get to see each other's faces in the off-season more than ever,” says Claypool.
