One of the most widely held cliches in the #art world is the #starvingartist – but these successful #RICalumni are defying that stereotype. They say talented #artists can survive if they approach artmaking as a business. Rachel Paolino, BFA #sculpture ‘06 (pics 1 & 2), made a living through #welding, photography and as a sales rep for a wood flooring company, taking on side projects for contractors and designers she’d meet along the way. In 2016, she parlayed that into her own company, weldingcreations. shawngilheeney, BFA #printmaking ‘08 (pics 3 & 4), opened a business with fellow RIC alum Greg Pennisten ‘13 painting signs the old fashioned way: by hand. You may recognize some of providencepaintedsigns bigger works, like the trinity_rep #mural downtown. Heather Majkut (pics 5 & 6) earned a BFA in #metalsmithing & #jewelrydesign in 2012. She works for a local costume #jewelry company while designing her own line in her Providence-based studio. nickgebhart, BFA #painting ‘13 (pic 7), has exhibited work in NY & RI, and worked for such esteemed artists as ranortner, Jeff Koons & Zaria Forman. They’re not starving, they’re surviving and #thriving. “Surviving can be comfortable,” says RIC Art Professor Richard Whitten. “Success is surviving to do your art another day.”
