Film Probe is going to TIFF’26! This will be my first experience of Toronto International Film Festival and I wanted to share, in preparation, a number of the films that will be featured at the festival this year that I am particularly excited to see!  Please note, I have stuck to gala and special presentations for this post. I will be sharing a second volume of films from the other categories too!  Also, below I have included a breakdown explaining what each category label means. So, if like me, you’re attending TIFF for the first time or you’re intrigued by the categories, now you know exactly what each one means! TIFF organises its film slate into program subsets. These categories can give you an ideas about the types of film you may see with that specific label;  - Galas | Usually the most prestigious, the biggest (mostly American) films, featuring big name talent.  - Special Presentations | Next most prestigious films, usually galas and special presentations fall under the same category.  - Platform | Spotlighting a 12-film lineup with 12 different directors and countries represented. It can often have very distinctive or bold storytelling. - Discovery | Spotlighting new filmmakers, 1st or 2nd film at their first film festival. Smaller international films can appear here. - Midnight Madness | Usually horror, thriller, dark comedies are shown under this label. - Wavelengths | Non-narrative films and/or non-traditional filmmaking. Falling outside of the mainstream appeal. - Centrepiece | The primary program list. A broad mix of everything available to watch, usually smaller than the Special Presentations but often bigger / more established than the Discovery selection. - Primetime | Auteur-driven television, streaming projects, high-profile limited series, and premium docuseries. Typically showcasing one or two episodes.
