Digital twins, drones, robotics, AI, augmented reality: Emerging technologies are laying the foundation for a new era of innovation and efficiency in construction. But it also means some serious upskilling for project managers—and it’s not just about getting up to speed on the latest tech.

Using building information modeling on a recent senior housing project helped in planning and provided real-time data to manage execution, says Rami Kaibni, PMI-CP, PgMP, PfMP, a senior projects developer and manager at Field & Marten Associates in Vancouver. 

But tapping such technology makes people skills like emotional intelligence, and communication “more important than ever,” he says.

Why? Construction projects are becoming increasingly complex—with teams “bringing together more and more sophisticated datasets with more and more stakeholders,” says Tim Wark, regional digital director for Australia and New Zealand at aecom in Brisbane.

So, what does it take to thrive amidst all the digital disruption? “People who can learn quickly, can build those relationships and can build strong networks will be the ideal program and project managers of the future.”
