A tropical depression has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha by Monday as it moves toward the northern Gulf Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Depression Two formed Sunday morning and is about 190 miles south of Panama City, Florida. As of the latest advisory, the system has maximum sustained winds of 30 miles per hour and is nearly stationary. 


A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect along parts of Florida’s Gulf Coast, from the Ochlockonee River to the Florida-Alabama border. That means tropical storm conditions are possible in those areas within the next 36 to 48 hours.

Forecasters say the system is expected to gradually strengthen and could become a tropical storm by Monday.

The depression is forecast to move near or along the northern Gulf Coast over the next several days, bringing the potential for heavy rain, coastal flooding, and gusty winds from western Florida to parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting between 2 and 4 inches of rain, with some areas possibly seeing up to 8 inches through Thursday across portions of the Gulf Coast. That rainfall could lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas.


There’s also a risk of coastal flooding from storm surge. Forecasters say water levels could rise 1 to 3 feet above normally dry ground along parts of Florida’s Gulf Coast if peak surge occurs around high tide.
