Voters passed the renewal of an existing tax to generate an estimated $13.6 million annually for the sheriff's department over a period of ten years.

The millage, which will take effect in 2028, will be used to pay the salaries of sheriff's office employees. The renewal also funds deputies' benefits, equipment, and other operational expenses for the sheriff's department, according to local law enforcement officials.

The successful ballot measure follows heavy campaigning from parish officials on the message that the arrest of former Sheriff Randy Smith is not representative of the department.
