It was 38 years ago that a massive 7-alarm fire tore through the historic Cabildo in the heart of the French Quarter.

The fire threatened one of New Orleans’ oldest and most important landmarks — the site where the Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies were signed. The blaze caused major damage and nearly destroyed centuries of history.

This WWL-TV archive report from 1988 features legendary reporter Sally-Ann Roberts covering the fire as it unfolded.

Watch this look back at one of the most significant fires in New Orleans history.
