A new documentary revisits the story of 272 enslaved people sold to Louisiana plantations in 1838 to save Georgetown University from financial collapse.

-The film, The Georgetown 272: The Journey, traces what happened after Jesuit priests sold enslaved men, women and children from Maryland to Louisiana.
-Historians and descendants in the documentary say the people sold endured a brutal journey and separation, and that about 4,000 descendants are alive today.
-Descendants and researchers featured in the film say Georgetown’s response to this history has not gone far enough.
-Georgetown said it is engaged in a long-term process of memorialization, research and reconciliation tied to its history of slavery.

Reported by David Hammer, WWL Louisiana.

The documentary had its first public screening at Loyola University in New Orleans during Black History Month.
