Helena Moreno leads the 2025 New Orleans mayoral race, polling at 47% in WWL Louisiana’s exclusive survey. But her path to politics wasn’t typical.

Background: Born in Mexico, Moreno moved to Texas at age 8 and came to New Orleans in 2001 as a TV reporter and anchor.

Political career: Elected to the Louisiana House in 2010, Moreno has built her platform on advocacy for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and public health reforms.

Policy focus: She has pushed for marijuana decriminalization, mental health services, and fentanyl testing strips.

Campaign slogan: “New Direction” — emphasizing improved city services, infrastructure, and investment in community organizations to reduce youth violence.

Philosophy: Moreno says the city should partner with nonprofits already doing effective grassroots work instead of duplicating efforts.

📊 WWL Louisiana poll (August 2025):

Helena Moreno — 47%
Royce Duplessis — 18%
Oliver Thomas — 16%
