I had this experience while I was a resident physician.

As healthcare providers, we can sometimes argue that our workload and other demands/factors beyond our control have shortened our medical encounters to the point that we are unable to have genuine conversations, which can be accurate to an extent, but all healthcare providers need to communicate more with and listen to their patients.

It enables us to comprehend not just the patient’s condition but also their entire story.

I believe patients feel more at ease and trust healthcare providers including physicians more when they listen intently and, therefore, are more likely to heed their doctor’s advice.

Speaking with a patient can assist in determining whether their health problem is more complex than it first appears.

Not just physiologically but emotionally, it improves patients’ quality of life, and by encouraging effective communication, we can help patients recover more quickly by preventing errors in diagnosis.
