Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is rare and caused by bacteria (staphylococcus or streptococcus) getting into the body and releasing toxins.

It’s often associated with younger individuals that use tampons (particularly if you leave them in for longer than recommended or you use “super-absorbent” tampons), although it can affect anyone of any age or gender.

Symptoms may include but not limited to flu like symptoms, diarrhea, widespread rash, difficulty breathing, confusion.

If you have any concerns or symptoms get help as soon as possible.

If you decide to use tampons, here are tips to help reduce your risk of TSS:

* Use the lowest absorbency tampon you can.

*Change your tampon frequently : preferably every 4 to 8 hours, depending on your flow (avoid leaving it in overnight, but if you really have to, insert one just before bed and take it out as soon as you wake up)

*Use pads on light flow days.

* Don’t use tampons when you don’t have your period.

* Always wash your hands before putting a tampon in or taking one out.

* when using female barrier contraception, follow the manufacturer’s instructions about how long you can leave it in
