Smoke from wildfires in Canada has spread across most of the U.S. Northeast.

This has triggered air quality alerts in various states.

Wildfire smoke and ash can cause irritation of your eyes, nose, throat and lungs, making you cough, wheeze and can make it difficult to breathe.

The most effective way to protect yourself during such an emergency is to stay indoors.

Try to limit time spent outdoors while there is smoke in the air.

The precautions listed are especially important for those at high risk: those with heart conditions, the elderly, immunocompromised, young children and people who already have respiratory problems, people with asthma.
