The human papilloma virus, or HPV, is a common STI that can lead to a range of health problems, including genital warts and certain types of cancer.

This infection is so common, that most s_xually active individuals will contract it at some point in their lives.

It is essential to understand that HPV is not cancer. Rather it is a virus that can lead to cancer over time.

In fact, most people who contract HPV will clear the virus on their own without ever developing any health problems.

Only a small percentage of individuals with persistent HPV infections, will go on to develop any health problems including cancer.

Following a HPV cervical screening test, if the result is positive for HPV, this means that you have a type of high-risk HPV that's linked to cervical cancer.

It doesn't necessarily mean that you currently have or will ever develop cervical cancer, but it's a warning sign that you might be at risk of developing cervical cancer in the future.

Your healthcare provider will recommend follow-up steps you need to take, based on your specific test results and individual risk.
