A study published in the Nature Medicine journal noted that another patient has been cured after undergoing a risky stem cell transplant.

A 53-year-old male who had HIV and also acute myeloid leukemia. The patient underwent a stem cell transplant using cells that lacked a specific gene.

This gene is known to play a role in the entry of HIV into cells.

After the transplant, the patient was carefully monitored for more than 9 years and showed no signs of HIV replication or disease progression.

While small amounts of HIV DNA were found in some cells and tissues, the virus was not found to be capable of replicating or causing illness.

In addition, the patient's immune system did not show signs of ongoing HIV antigen production, suggesting that the virus had been cleared.

Four years after stopping antiviral treatment, the patient did not experience a viral rebound, which is when HIV levels increase in the blood after treatment is stopped. This suggests that the patient may have been cured of HIV after the stem cell transplant.

The patient’s physician noted the virus is “really cured” and not in “long-term remission”

I believe this is great news but it’s important to note that the stem cell transplantation procedure is a complicated procedure that comes with many risks, and it is too risky to offer it as a cure for everyone with HIV.

However, scientists are hopeful. Each time they cure a new patient, they gain valuable research insights that help them understand what it would take to find a cure for everyone.
