## Caption

Although abdominal cramps are one of the most well-known symptoms associated with menstrual bleeding, some may experience cramps elsewhere during their periods.

There are some possible reasons for this occurrence, including

- Prostaglandins: hormones released during the period that can cause inflammation and contractions which may also involve the muscles of the bowel and rectum. 

- Endometriosis: While not incredibly common, these cramps can be a symptom of endometriosis. Having endometrial tissue implants outside the uterus can lead to discomfort when you’re on your period. 

- proctalgia Fugax: this condition causes severe, intermittent episodes of cramp, stabbing like rectal pain that are transient and self resolve. The diagnosis of proctalgia fugax requires exclusion of other causes. 

- Another potential cause is a retroverted uterus which means your uterus is tilted or tipped backward so it curves toward your spine instead of forward toward your abdomen.

- Other gastrointestinal issues like hemorrhoids, fissures, fistula can also be responsible. 

If you have cramps during your period that are so severe that you cannot participate in daily activities, or suddenly became worse, consult your healthcare provider.
