According to the CDC, More than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes.

Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of d34th in the United States (and may be underreported).

Type 2 diabetes is more common and accounts for approximately 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes while type 1 diabetes accounts for approximately
5-10%.

Type 1 diabetes was once called insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes. It usually develops in children, teens, and young adults, but it can happen at any age.

In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled which is really concerning.

The WHO noted that the number of people with diabetes rose from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014.

Prevalence has been rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

With diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it as well as it should.

When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream.

Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

There isn’t a cure yet for diabetes, but certain lifestyle habit changes can really help with its management.

A healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use are ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes can also be managed and its consequences avoided or delayed with diet, physical activity, medication and regular screening and treatment for complications.
