## Caption

A digital rectal exam is a test that helps to examine the lower rectum, pelvis and lower abdomen. 

It helps the physician evaluate for cancers and other conditions like prostate cancer, an abnormal mass in the rectum/anus, abnormal growths in women’s reproductive organs. 

It can also be part of a routine medical exam especially if you have symptoms like rectal bleeding, change in bowel habits. 

Although a DRE poses no significant risk, some people find it uncomfortable though temporary.
