During pregnancy, there are some symptoms you might experience that you never expected and excessive salivation could be one of them.

Ptyalism is a condition where you make too much saliva. In this situation, people might produce up to one to two litres of saliva daily.

It tends to affect women in the early stages of pregnancy, most common during the first trimester. In rare cases, it does not improve at the end of the first trimester but continues, or even increases in amount, until delivery.

There could be associated difficulty in swallowing saliva and require spitting cups, paper tissue or cloth wicks through some/all trimesters of pregnancy.

Although it could be an unpleasant mental and physical condition, it does not pose any specific risk to the mother/fetus or the pregnancy.

PS: Although it would be fun to be able to figure the s*x of the baby based on the amount of saliva produced, there’s no evidence that organism is related to the s*x of the fetus.
