Iron deficiency anemia occurs when the body doesn’t have enough iron to produce hemoglobin.

Hemoglobin is the part of the blood that gives it it’s red color and enable red blood cells to carry oxygen rich blood around the body.

So if the body is losing too much iron or you aren’t consuming enough iron, your body cannot produce hemoglobin which may eventually lead to iron deficiency anemia.

As a follow up video to the prior quiz , this condition is common and can occur in both men and women of any age and from any ethnic group but some people may be at a higher risk of IDA than others.

Iron-deficiency anemia affects more women than men. The risk of iron-deficiency anemia is highest for women who:

1. Are pregnant. If you're pregnant, you're at increased risk of iron deficiency anemia. During pregnancy, the volume of blood in the body increases, and so does the amount of iron needed. More iron is needed during pregnancy to support the unborn baby’s development.

2. Have heavy menstrual periods. Women of childbearing age can potentially develop iron-deficiency anemia because of heavy bleeding during their periods.

Regular periods should not lose enough blood to experience negative side effects, but significant blood loss during your period can lead to anemia.
