So much wrong information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) gets passed around that it’s no surprise the diseases do too.

The only way to be 100% sure you won’t get an STI like herpes, chlamydia, or HIV, is not to have any type of S3x(abstinence).

If you do decide to have S3x , you’ll need to stay informed and learn what’s true.

1. A condom can help lower your risk, but it’s not foolproof. They don’t always completely cover infected areas or they can rip or break.
Don’t count solely on a condom for protection from an STI. It is important to communicate with your partner about your STI status and to get regular STD screenings.

2. STIs are easily spread through all forms of sex: v4g1nal, an*l, and oral.

3. You or your partner can have and transmit an STI without exhibiting any signs or symptoms at all. That’s why testing is so important.

4. Some STDs are incurable and last for life, like herpes and HIV. Others, like chlamydia and gonorrhea, can be treated, but you may get infected again if you have sexual contact with someone who has them.

It is important to protect yourself with condoms, of course! And if you’re having S3x, let your doctor know so you can get tested regularly.

If you do get diagnosed with an STI, your partner should be treated at the same time you are. That way your partner will avoid future problems — and avoid reinfecting you.
