🩺 A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection involving any part of your urinary system (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra) with most infections involving the bladder and urethra.

🩺 Women have been shown to have a greater risk of developing UTIs when compared to men.

🩺 Although we typically treat urinary tract infections with antibiotics, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting a UTI in the first place.

1. Drink plenty of liquids, especially water. This helps dilute your urine and ensures that you'll urinate more frequently — allowing bacteria to be flushed from your urinary tract before an infection can begin.

2. Wiping from front to back after urinating and after a bowel movement helps prevent bacteria in the perineal/anal region from spreading to the vagina and urethra.

3. Avoid holding in your urine, as this can encourage bacterial growth. Try not to wait and completely empty your bladder each time.

4. Scented feminine products can disrupt your vaginal balance, allowing harmful bacteria to overgrow. This can result in UTIs, bacterial vaginosis, and yeast infections. It can also irritate the urethra.

5. Sexual activity increases the chances of getting a UTI, especially if you’re a woman. That’s because bacteria can easily get into the urethra during sex. To reduce your risk, Empty your bladder soon after intercourse. Also, drink a full glass of water to help flush bacteria.
