Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a condition that happens when there is too much of certain bacteria in the vagina, and in the process changing the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina.

It is the most common vaginal condition in women aged 15-44 years of age. The rate is higher in black women.

It is a result of an imbalance of “good” and “harmful” bacteria in a vagina.

Anyone with a vagina can get bacterial vaginosis (BV), even if you haven’t had sex. It usually occurs more often in people who are sexually active.

Also, douching, not using condoms, and having new or multiple sex partners can increase the risk of getting BV.

A healthcare provider can treat BV with antibiotics. You should be checked and treated by a healthcare provider if you have symptoms.
