The genius of the new laikastudios stop-motion film “Wildwood,” based on the book written by The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis (both of Portland), is that it takes real elements of Portland, like those crows, and underlines them, animates them and makes them magic.

The final product, which opens Friday, is an exhilarating hyperlocal animated adventure story.
