The director of the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa says the cross-state bike ride will no longer attempt to set a Guinness World Record when this year's 50th anniversary edition of the weeklong event pedals from Ames into Des Moines.

The Guinness record entry notes that the most participants in a bicycle tour in excess of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) is 2,037 during the Australian Bicentennial Caltex Bike Ride from Melbourne to Sydney in 1988.

But the seven-day RAGBRAI, despite having 28,000 registered participants this year ― not to mention what are expected to be thousands of unregistered tag-alongs ("bandits," in RAGBRAI slang) ― falls short because it will cover about 500 miles.
