“Four months ago, my life changed completely. It was around 2:15 and I had a shift as a dock attendant that day, when I saw a 15-foot private boat that had capsized off the wall of Ellis island! I quickly ran towards the wall and heard the fearful screams, 'help, help!!' All of a sudden, everything slowed down and time froze. At that very moment, the only thing that mattered to me was saving the lives I knew were in danger. My body jumped down 20 feet into the water, and began to swim.
I was running on fear and adrenaline as I swam against the brutal currents. My goal was roughly 75 feet away, a family trying their hardest to stay afloat. Once I managed to get near them, a man started crying out, 'save her, please save her!!'
He briefly told me that his youngest daughter (only 5 years old) was trapped under the sinking boat. I quickly put all of my strength into flipping the boat, and unfortunately that didn't work. But I couldn’t give up on her. I found a way to reach in, and to my luck, I grabbed her shoulder. I began to pull her out, and realized that she was tangled in some rope. I kept pulling and, simultaneously, untangling the rope around her whole body. Miraculously, she began to gasp for air and let out a cry. I instantly grabbed both her and her sister, and swam towards the wall of Ellis island. I somehow got them to safety, and everything seemed unreal. Together, we waited in the water, until the police rescue-boats arrived to take us out of the water.
On that day, I saw both hopelessness and resolution. Both tragedy and happiness. Both life and death.” #RHOMS #RedHawkPride #RedHawkHero #CarpeDiem #SeizeTheDay #BeTheChange #RedHawkLife
-Kevin Suarez (20) from Jersey City, NJ
-Junior majoring in Mathematics
-NJ.com wrote an article about what happened, and has followed-up with all of us after everything that happened
