Researchers recently identified two new plant species in the Northeast, proving that even some of the country's most closely studied landscapes can still hold undiscovered life. In New York, scientists confirmed Actaea rhodostigma (pink baneberry) as a distinct species after years of being mistaken for a hybrid. They found that the plant has unique characteristics, including striking pink-purple stigmas and a subtle citrus fragrance, both traits that are only noticeable for a short amount of time during flowering and fruiting. ⁠

Farther south in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, researchers identified Triantha x novacaesariensis, a rare endemic species that grows to about 25 inches tall and displays delicate white flowers. The plant is believed to have originated from an ancient hybridization event before evolving into its own distinct species in isolation. ⁠

Researchers say both discoveries highlight the importance of protecting native habitats. "We may be losing species that we don't even know exist," says Cornell Professor Chelsea Specht. "Unless you really know what species you have in the wild, it's hard to predict and promote biodiverse systems that aren't sustainable." ⁠
