AHS GROWERS CORNER: ODD PLANT PROBLEMS:
You did everything right, but your seeds & plants are showing signs of distress. This three-part series examines those “difficult to diagnose” issues home gardeners encounter while germinating seeds or growing indoor plants. We start with seeds that have poor or erratic germination, often identified by malformed or dwarfed sprouts or are not growing at all. What happened? This can be caused by improper planting (too deep), ambient temperature fluctuations (being close to a window), mold (fuzzy white stuff on top of soil), and uneven moisture (poor soil composition). How to solve? Seeds should be lightly covered with the potting mix at depths of one or two times the diameter of the seed. Uneven moisture levels? Check the medium you’re germinating on or look at the soil to make sure it’s not “over-charged” with big-plant level nutrients. Best to use a simple mix of compost, coir, and perlite. Perlite, by the way, in potting soil is a non-organic additive that aerates the sprouting media nicely. Next up, we look at what causes your plants to grow tall and spindly, caused by two often-made mistakes of the indoor gardener.
