Although archicritic Paul Goldberger said it was "absolutely the wrong building in the wrong place," one thing is certain: the Guggenheim was, when it debuted in 1959, a revelation; yet, despite these challenges-and the initial controversy around the structure-it has become one of New York's most popular museums, attracting more than a million visitors each year. And it's a safe bet that many of them are there more for the building than for the art, which, no doubt, is exactly how Wright would have wanted it.
