Political borders can be more than just imaginary lines on a map. Over time divisions can impact the surrounding landscape, become visible from space, and reveal stories between its two sides. Here are five political borders shaping their environment.

Image 1: Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the same island, but the two countries look vastly different. The DR, seen to the right of the river winding from the image’s top left to bottom right, has far more vegetation than the heavily deforested Haitian side. Image 2: For nearly 70 years the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea has been uninterrupted by human development and has become a wildlife sanctuary. PlanetScope • North Korea-South Korea DMZ • May 16, 2022

Image 4: In arid Central Asia, different approaches to land use create this stark difference along the Kazakhstan-China border. China heavily irrigates all possible arable land, while Kazakhstan relies on rainwater to farm this region. PlanetScope • Kazakhstaan-China border • June 29, 2022

Image 5: Brazilian farms reach right up to the Madeira River, used as a border for the northern corner of Bolivia. On the other side is a 750,000 hectare wildlife preserve. PlanetScope • Bolivia-Brazil border • June 27, 2022
