It’s common for #amberjacks and other large #gamefish to have worms in their flesh. These #parasitic #tapeworms (Trypanorhyncha) aka “spaghetti worms” begin their life cycle as eggs inside the digestive tract of a shark infested with adult tapeworms. The eggs are released into the water via the sharks feces. After the eggs hatch they will mature into adult coracidium larva. The transformation into the second larva stage (procercoid larva) takes place when the coracidium is consumed by small crustaceans. It is assumed that small fish which are prey of the #amberjack will consume an infested crustacean. The transformation into the third larva stage (plerocercoid larva) takes place when the worm is inside an amberjack. At this stage, the worm will grow and remain in the amberjack waiting to be consumed by a shark. Once consumed by a #shark, the worm will mature into an adult #tapeworm and the life cycle of the #parasite is complete.
