"The fog in London assumes all sorts of colors. There are black, brown, yellow, green, and purple...the interest in painting is to get the objects as seen through all these fogs." - Claude Monet, 1901.
.
Monet's London was very much a modern city. Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge, and the Houses of Parliament—the three subjects he painted—were all built in the 19th century and listed as notable landmarks for tourists at the time. In the decades before Monet's visits, the building boom along the Thames river had transformed London.
.
Monet visited London three times between 1899 and 1901, painting every day in his rooms at the luxurious Savoy hotel. The three Waterloo Bridge paintings in Monet and the Modern City capture the differences in atmosphere and color created by the smoke billowing from the Lambeth Lead Works across the river.
