## Caption

This portrait of Isabella de' Medici was thought to be a fake, but through research our conservator realized it had been painted over and altered (swipe to see the pre-conservation version). She carefully restored the painting to its original state, which you can now see in the Scaife galleries.
.
Each painting in our collection has a story. In 2017, we installed an exhibition called Created, Collected, Conserved, which explores the history and conservation of seven paintings from the Northbrook Collection in England. By combining interactive technology with centuries-old portraits, the exhibition traces the ways that history shapes culture.

Attributed to Alessandro Allori, Portrait of Isabella de' Medici, ca. 1570–1574, Carnegie Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. Paul B. Ernst.
