This mesmerizing #toughart prototype by Shohei Katayama uses magnets and a contact microphone on hundreds of tiny steel balls. As they move, it sounds like raindrops.

The Tough Art Program is an innovative artist residency program challenges artists and audiences to rethink their ideas of interactive museum experiences in one of the toughest venues – a children’s museum. Participating artists learn how their artworks connect with visitors outside of the typical museum environment, and what it takes to create artwork that can sustain the rigors of a hands-on environment.
.
Shohei Katayama is a Japanese American artist. He is working towards an MFA at Carnegie Mellon University and lives in Pittsburgh. His work includes line drawings, sculpture and conceptual installation art. Shohei plays with the theme of showing the invisible systems within ecology or society. During his Tough Art Residency, Shohei aims to create an immersive experience by experimenting with magnetic fields and how they manipulate objects that come in contact with their force field.
