.
This week’s Teenie Tuesday post seeks to pay special tribute to Walt Harper in celebration of being a recipient of the 2017 Spirit of King Award, as presented by Kingsley Association, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New Pittsburgh Courier and Port Authority of Allegheny County. Each year, the Spirit of King Award Ceremony honors the lifetime achievements of local citizens who pursue human rights and equality in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
.
"Walt" Harper (July 3, 1926 – October 25, 2006) was an American jazz pianist and owner of Walt Harper’s Attic, a local nightclub located in downtown Pittsburgh. A Pittsburgh native, Harper grew up in Schenley Heights and attended Schenley High School, along with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and bassist Ray Brown, who is also featured in this image.
.
As a young man, Harper helped form the group, the Swinging Five, with Brown. Additionally, Harper's larger 10-piece band performed at the Crawford Grill in the Hill District from 1958 to 1969, when Harper opened his own club, Walt Harper's Attic.
