The Teenie Harris Archive at CMOA is proud to announce its new exhibition, “Teenie Harris Photographs: Elections”. Through the lens of Charles “Teenie” Harris, we witness the campaigns of national and local candidates from 1940–1970s and compare his era to today’s political process.
.
This imposing key shot is of K. Leroy Irvis, who was the first African American speaker of the house in any state legislature since Reconstruction. Other highlights from this show include President John F. Kennedy speaking in an open forum in Monessen PA, and Vice President Richard Nixon and Pat Nixon greeting a crowd from a car on Centre Ave. in the Hill District.
.
Our guest curators are three Pittsburgh native sons: Actor/Activist Michael Keaton, Pittsburgh City Councilman R. Daniel Lavelle, and retired KDKA News Reporter Harold Hayes. Through their 25 selections you’ll note differences from our current candidates, but perhaps you’ll see more similarities than one would expect. Whatever the case, you will not be at a loss for the artistry that Mr. Harris offers the viewer. Having known many of these politicians personally, Teenie took photos that other news photographers were not privy to. In fact, it was another elected official, Mayor (later PA Governor) David L. Lawrence, who was so impressed with Teenie’s photographic speed, accuracy and dynamic results, that he nicknamed him “One Shot” Harris.
