A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Back to the Future Part III (3).

Back to the Future Part III is a 1990 American science fiction Western film and the final chapter in the Back to the Future trilogy. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Mary Steenburgen, Thomas F. Wilson, and Lea Thompson. Picking up immediately after the events of Back to the Future Part II (1989), the story follows Marty McFly (Fox), who, while stranded in 1955, learns that his friend Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Lloyd) is trapped in 1885 and is destined to be killed by Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Wilson), Biff’s ruthless great-grandfather. Determined to save Doc, Marty travels back to 1885, but complications arise when Doc falls in love with Clara Clayton (Steenburgen).

The film, which had a budget of $40 million, was shot across locations in California and Arizona. It was produced back-to-back with Part II and released in the United States on May 25, 1990—six months after its predecessor. It earned $245 million globally, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of the year. Critics responded positively, often viewing it as an improvement over Part II.

In November 1955, just after witnessing Doc vanish in the DeLorean, Marty discovers that Doc has been sent back 70 years to 1885. With help from the 1955 version of Doc, he locates and repairs the time machine using details from a letter Doc wrote from the Old West. However, Marty soon finds a tombstone with Doc’s name on it, revealing that Doc was shot by Buford Tannen only days after writing the letter. Ignoring Doc’s warning not to come back, Marty travels to September 2, 1885, and arrives amid a cavalry chase involving Native Americans. The DeLorean’s fuel line is damaged, and after a bear encounter, Marty is rescued by his Irish-born great-great-grandparents, Seamus and Maggie McFly.

Using the alias "Clint Eastwood," Marty heads to the fledgling town of Hill Valley, where he clashes with Buford and his gang. Buford attempts to hang Marty, but Doc saves him. After learning of his fate, Doc agrees to leave 1885, but the lack of gasoline leaves them stranded. Doc proposes using a steam locomotive to push the DeLorean to the required 88 miles per hour. While scouting the railway, Doc saves Clara Clayton from falling into a ravine, altering her fate and falling in love with her.

Buford tries to shoot Doc at the town festival, but Marty intervenes. Buford then challenges Marty to a showdown in two days, mocking him as “yellow.” Marty accepts, believing he and Doc will have already left. Doc later tells Marty that reacting to insults leads to an accident in his future. Though hesitant to leave Clara, Doc says goodbye and ends their relationship. Clara, heartbroken and unconvinced by his story, dismisses him.

As Marty prepares to avoid the duel, he sees that the tombstone now has his alias. Buford’s gang captures Doc, forcing Marty to face Buford. During the duel, Marty tricks Buford and knocks him into a manure wagon. Buford and his gang are arrested for a past robbery.

Meanwhile, Clara discovers Doc’s workshop and realizes he was telling the truth. She rushes to find him. Doc and Marty begin the push toward the future using a stolen locomotive. Clara boards the train but nearly falls. Doc saves her using Marty’s hoverboard, and they escape together. Marty reaches 88 mph in the DeLorean and returns to October 27, 1985. He exits the stalled car just before it’s destroyed by a freight train.

Reunited with Jennifer, Marty chooses not to drag race with Needles, avoiding the accident Doc had warned him about. Jennifer’s fax showing Marty’s future firing disappears. As the two reflect at the DeLorean’s wreckage, Doc arrives in a time-traveling steam locomotive with Clara and their children. He gives Marty a photo of them by the 1885 town clock. When Jennifer asks about the blank fax, Doc explains that the future is unwritten and it's up to them to make it good. He and his family then depart through time.
