A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Back to the Future Part II (2).

Back to the Future Part II is a 1989 American science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Bob Gale, who also co-developed the story. A sequel to the 1985 hit Back to the Future, it is the second installment in the iconic trilogy. The film stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Thomas F. Wilson, with Elisabeth Shue and Jeffrey Weissman taking over supporting roles played initially by Claudia Wells and Crispin Glover.

The story follows Marty McFly (Fox) and Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Lloyd) as they travel from 1985 to the year 2015 to prevent Marty’s son from making a mistake that could ruin the family's future. Their mission goes awry when Biff Tannen (Wilson) steals the DeLorean and uses it to alter history for personal gain. Marty and Doc must return to 1955 to correct the timeline and restore order.

Although the filmmakers consulted scientific predictions to imagine what 2015 might look like, director Robert Zemeckis admitted the film was never intended as a severe forecast of the future. In a 2010 interview, he reflected, “Filming the future scenes was the least enjoyable part of making the trilogy, because I don't like films that try to predict the future. The only ones I've enjoyed were the ones by Stanley Kubrick—and not even he predicted the PC in A Clockwork Orange. So, rather than try to make a scientifically accurate future that we’d probably get wrong, we decided to make it funny.” Writer Bob Gale echoed that sentiment: “We knew we weren't going to have flying cars by 2015, but God, we had to have those in our movie.”

Despite its whimsical tone, the film accurately anticipated several technological and social developments by 2015: widespread use of surveillance cameras, drones for news coverage, flat-screen TVs with multiple channels, smart home features, video calling, hands-free gaming, animated digital billboards, wearable tech, tablets with fingerprint scanners, and head-mounted displays. The movie also showcased biometric payment methods using thumbprints. While that method wasn’t mainstream by 2015, fingerprint scanning had become common in airports and schools, and secure mobile payments with fingerprint authentication, such as Apple Pay, were in active use.

Still, many of the film's more imaginative ideas, like flying cars and hoverboards, remained unfulfilled by 2015. Nevertheless, their inclusion helped cement the film’s playful, enduring vision of the future.

Produced on a $40 million budget, Back to the Future Part II was filmed back-to-back with Part III. Production began in February 1989 following two years of scriptwriting and set construction. The film marked a significant achievement for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), which pushed visual effects boundaries using digital compositing and the VistaGlide motion control camera system. This system allowed actors to appear in multiple roles within the same frame while maintaining dynamic camera movement.

Released by Universal Pictures on November 22, 1989, the film earned mostly positive reviews, though some critics felt it didn’t quite match the charm of its predecessor. Over time, however, it has gained critical reappraisal and is now regarded as one of its era's most inventive sequels and sci-fi films. The film grossed over \$332 million worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing movie of 1989. The trilogy concluded with Back to the Future Part III, released on May 25, 1990.
