Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is a steel roller coaster at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando. Standing 167 feet tall and stretching 3800 feet in length, it was the largest X-Car coaster ever built by German manufacturer Maurer Söhne when it debuted on August 19, 2009. Reaching speeds up to 65 mph, the ride is best known for its customizable onboard music, personal ride video recordings, and innovative vertical lift hill. After nearly 16 years in operation, it is scheduled to permanently close on August 18, 2025.

Development began in January 2008 under the codename Project Rumble, with Maurer Rides confirmed as the manufacturer. Universal officially announced the coaster in March 2008, highlighting its 167-foot lift, 65 mph speed, on-ride audio selection, and embedded video recorders. During development, guests were surveyed on music preferences, selecting from artists like The Black Eyed Peas, Johnny Cash, and The Beach Boys.

Construction started in May 2008, including the partial demolition of the Twister...Ride It Out extended queue. The lift hill was completed by April 2009, but technical issues delayed the opening. Public previews began in August 2009, and the ride officially opened on August 19. Early complaints included roughness, particularly in rear seats, and inconsistent functionality of the multimedia features.

In September 2010, the coaster shut down due to concerns over train coupling bars. It reopened in October with upgraded components. Initially offering a 30-song playlist across five genres, this was reduced to five songs in August 2023, with hidden access to 60 additional tracks via a code input. However, selecting these disables video purchase due to music licensing.

By December 2024, Universal filed permits signaling the ride’s removal, later confirming on December 27 that it would close in August 2025, ahead of a new attraction being built.

Guests enter via a main, express, or single rider line and must pass through metal detectors. Inside, digital screens explain how to choose music via a touchscreen on each restraint. The loading system features a moving sidewalk synchronized with slow-moving trains, giving guests about 45 seconds to board, secure their lap bar, and choose a song.

The ride begins with a vertical chain lift while the selected song plays. At the top, a voiceover declares, Hold on tight baby cause we’re taking you skyward You ready to Rockit From there, the train dives into elements like The Double Take a non-inverting loop, The Treble Clef an upward helix resembling a musical note, The Jump Cut a sharp sequence of turns, and multiple mid-course brake runs, before concluding on a final hill and brake run.

The coaster’s track includes sound-dampening materials and six braking zones to manage speed. Its seven X-Car trains each feature two cars with six seats, built with individual audio systems and LED lighting for nighttime operation.
