Your Day Ahead on NewsChannel 5 offers a trip to the Universal Orlando Resort. Watch Your Day Ahead starting April 29, 1999, for details.

WEWS-TV (channel 5) is an ABC-affiliated television station serving Cleveland, Ohio. Since its launch in 1946, it has been owned by the E. W. Scripps Company—one of only three stations the company originally built and signed on (alongside its flagship WCPO-TV in Cincinnati and WMC-TV in Memphis, which was sold in 1993). WEWS-TV’s studios are situated on Euclid Avenue near I-90 in downtown Cleveland, and its transmitter is located in the Parma suburb.

Among its distinguished former on-air personalities are Ernie Anderson, Leon Bibb, Nev Chandler, Liz Claman, Joel Daly, Dick Feagler, Dorothy Fuldheim, John Hambrick, Ted Henry, Chris Hernandez, Bill Jorgensen, Paige Palmer, Michael Reghi, Michael Settonni, Gib Shanley, Wilma Smith, Robin Swoboda, Tim Taylor, Matt Underwood, and Don Webster.

By 1999, Universal Studios Florida was a decade old and firmly established as a hybrid “production‐theme park” that combined working back‐lot facilities with immersive, movie‐ and television‐themed attractions. Guests entered through a turn‐of‐the‐century studio façade into Production Central, where the beloved E.T. Adventure dark ride and Fievel’s Playland interactive playground welcomed families. Adjacent to Production Central sat Nickelodeon Studios, offering live tapings of popular children’s shows and guided backstage tram tours. From there, the park unfolded into themed areas—New York featured the thrilling Kongfrontation simulator and the Star Trek Special Effects Show; San Francisco was anchored by the Back to the Future motion‐simulator; World Expo housed Earthquake: The Big One, which combined a shaking subway simulator with a walk‐through stunt‐show demonstration; and Hollywood showcased Terminator 2: 3D, Backdraft’s fire‐effects tour, and the Horror Make‐Up Show. Beyond the staged lands, the Production Backlot Tram Tour guided guests past active sets, including Jaws’ Amity Island harbor and iconic façades from various films. Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone rounded out the experience with the Animal Actors Stage and additional play areas for younger visitors.

Throughout 1999, Universal Studios Florida’s lineup of signature attractions—E.T. Adventure, Back to the Future: The Ride, Kongfrontation, Jaws, Earthquake: The Big One, Terminator 2: 3D, Backdraft, the Horror Make‐Up Show, and the Star Trek Special Effects Show—drew crowds seeking both thrills and behind‐the‐scenes insights. The park’s working studio atmosphere allowed guests to experience fundamental production elements alongside state‐of‐the‐art simulators, walk‐through stunts, and live performances. Dining options like Mel’s Drive-In, Finnegan’s Bar & Grill, and shops such as the Universal Studios Store completed the guest experience. Although Universal Islands of Adventure opened next door in May 1999, Universal Studios Florida remained focused on its original blend of filmmaking and themed entertainment, setting the stage for the resort to grow into its multi-park destination.
