At the grand opening ceremony of Universal Epic Universe, Shobhit Jain, Content Strategist at Universal Orlando Resort, interviewed Tom Williams, the former Chairman and CEO of Universal Parks & Resorts (Destinations & Experiences).

Tom Williams concluded a distinguished 50-plus-year career in tourism. He moved to Orlando in 1988 to open Universal Studios Florida and, after being named the park’s president in 1990, transformed the destination into a multi-park, hotel, and entertainment complex. Appointed Chairman and CEO of Universal Parks & Resorts in 1999, Mr. Williams oversaw the brand’s global expansion, including parks in Osaka, Singapore, and Beijing. Under his leadership, attendance and revenue grew dramatically, and the company introduced groundbreaking attractions and immersive lands—most notably The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Super Nintendo World, and Universal Beijing Resort.

Universal Epic Universe opened on May 22, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, and became Universal Orlando Resort’s third theme park (and fourth overall) upon opening. Encompassing a 750-acre development, the park will be divided into five immersive lands—Celestial Park; Dark Universe; How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk; Super Nintendo World; and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.

Groundbreaking began in August 2019, though construction timelines were pushed back by the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial details about Epic Universe’s attractions were scarce, but information gradually emerged, with Super Nintendo World confirmed as the final land in early 2023. Signature experiences will include the motion-based dark rides Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment; the dual-track racing coaster Stardust Racers; and the augmented-reality adventure Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. Preview events for the park kicked off in March 2025.

The moment thrill seekers and theme park enthusiasts worldwide have been waiting for is almost here: Universal Epic Universe, Universal Orlando Resort’s groundbreaking new theme park, officially opens this Thursday, May 22. One of the most immersive and innovative theme parks ever created, Epic Universe transports guests to five imaginative worlds filled with extraordinary adventures: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Dark Universe and Celestial Park.
