This is official media used on the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Studio Tour, also known as the Backlot Tram Tour, is the signature ride at Universal Studios Hollywood in Universal City, California, just outside Los Angeles. This attraction takes guests behind the scenes of a working film studio, traveling through various sets on the Universal Studios Lot. Visitors board multi-car trams, guided by a live studio guide at the front, which also features additional commentary and pre-recorded videos. The tour lasts about 45–60 minutes, passing through the Front Lot, Backlot, and several themed attractions, showcasing sets from numerous Universal Pictures films.

Since its earliest days, the Studio Tour has been the heart of the park. In 1915, guests paid 25 cents to watch movie-making from bleachers. By 1964, the park introduced its iconic pink and white Glamor Trams, making the tour the main way to see Universal’s attractions. Departures originally began at the Front Lot Commissary, later moving to the Upper Lot Studio Tour Center in 1965. Over the years, the tram route has shifted between the Lower and Upper Lots, but since the debut of Jurassic Park, all boarding has taken place on the Upper Lot.

As the studio has expanded, the Studio Tour has continued to evolve. The original trams were replaced in 1983, with significant technological upgrades following over the years. CD players were introduced in 1989, followed by DVD players and LCD screens in 1999, and high-definition screens in 2009. This allowed guests to watch movie clips filmed on the lot.

The tour has also featured several celebrity video hosts over the years: Ron Howard (2000–2006), Whoopi Goldberg (2006–2009), Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell (2009–2011), and Jimmy Fallon, who has served as host since 2011. Fallon’s role includes providing additional narration and performing the original song “Tram-Tastic” at the end of the tour.

Electric trams were added to the fleet in 2022. For the tour’s 60th anniversary, all non-electric trams were redecorated to match the original pink and white "Glamor Trams." Several original tram cars now serve as shuttles to the Universal City Metro station.

The Studio Tour, along with the theme park, temporarily shut down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and reopened in April 2021.

Throughout the tour, guests see famous sets from Universal films, including Psycho, Back to the Future, The Sting, The Great Outdoors, and War of the Worlds. Other studios have also used the lot, including Walt Disney Studios, for films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, 101 Dalmatians, and The Princess Diaries 2. The tram passes by “general purpose” sets, such as Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives, and a classic Western town with six streets, each featuring a saloon and a sheriff’s station. This set was once used to film multiple westerns simultaneously. The tour also weaves through sound stages, where guides share information about current productions.

Until June 1, 2008, the tour featured city street facades, used in films such as Bruce Almighty and Transformers, as well as the Back to the Future trilogy. These sets, mainly built from wood, were destroyed in a fire but have since been rebuilt. Today, the tour includes King Kong: 360 3-D, which opened in July 2010.

Before concluding, the tram offers a panoramic view of the San Fernando Valley, including neighboring Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, before returning to the boarding area.
