The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a series of immersive themed lands at Universal Destinations & Experiences, brought to life by Universal Creative under an exclusive Warner Bros. license and inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original novels and their Warner Bros. film adaptations. In 2003, rumors surfaced of a Harry Potter–themed attraction at either Disney or Universal, but Warner Bros., which held the franchise rights, immediately dismissed them. Both Disney and Universal then entered negotiations with Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling for theme park rights. In 2004, Rowling signed a non-binding letter of intent with Disney to develop a Harry Potter area in Fantasyland at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. By January 2007, About.com reported a “highly credible” tip that Universal’s Islands of Adventure Lost Continent would be rethemed to one of the era’s biggest children’s franchises. Within days, other outlets echoed that it would indeed be based on Harry Potter. On May 31, 2007, Universal and Warner Bros. formally announced the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure. At Universal Orlando Resort in Florida, both Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida feature Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands, each linked by Hogwarts Express stations so guests can journey between the parks aboard a full‑scale replica of the film’s iconic train. The Wizarding World first opened at Islands of Adventure on June 18, 2010, immersing visitors in a faithful recreation of Hogsmeade Village. Its centerpiece is "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey," located inside a detailed replica of Hogwarts Castle. Guests can also enjoy the family coaster Flight of the Hippogriff and, since June 13, 2019, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (which replaced the Dragon Challenge dueling coasters). Beyond rides, Hogsmeade offers interactive experiences such as the Ollivanders Wand Shop, the Triwizard Spirit Rally, and the Frog Choir, plus themed shops and eateries like Dervish and Banges, Honeydukes, the Three Broomsticks, and the Hog’s Head pub. On July 8, 2014, Universal Studios Florida unveiled its own Wizarding World land, transporting fans to Diagon Alley and a corner of Muggle London. Here, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts takes center stage, alongside another Hogwarts Express connection. Visitors can also catch The Tales of Beedle the Bard puppet show or a live performance by Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees, then browse shops such as Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, Borgin and Burkes, Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions, Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment, and Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour. Dining is anchored by the Leaky Cauldron and additional Ollivanders locations. A third land, centered on the Ministry of Magic, will debut at Universal Epic Universe on May 22, 2025. Set in 1920s wizarding Paris, the attraction will feature rides inspired by both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, including the new Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride. Guests will also experience Le Cirque Arcanus, explore themed shops and restaurants, and “time travel” to the 1990s British Ministry of Magic via a Métro‑Floo station. © 2025 Universal Studios.
