Fort Lauderdale is a coastal city in Florida, located 30 miles (48 km) north of Miami along the Atlantic Ocean. It serves as the county seat and is the most populous city in Broward County, with a population 182,760 as of the 2020 census. This makes it the tenth-most populous city in Florida. Fort Lauderdale ranks as the third-most populous city in the Miami metropolitan area, following Miami and Hialeah, which had a combined metro population of 6,166,488 in 2019.

Founded in 1838 and incorporated in 1911, the city was named after a series of forts constructed by the United States during the Second Seminole War. These forts were named after Major William Lauderdale (1782–1838), the younger brother of Lieutenant Colonel James Lauderdale. The city's development began around 50 years after the forts were abandoned. Three forts named "Fort Lauderdale" were built: the first at the fork of the New River, the second at Tarpon Bend on the New River between what are now the Colee Hammock and Rio Vista neighborhoods, and the third near the site of Bahia Mar Marina.

Known as the "Venice of America," Fort Lauderdale boasts 165 miles of inland waterways throughout the city. In addition to tourism, the city's economy is diverse, encompassing marine industries, manufacturing, finance, insurance, real estate, high technology, avionics, aerospace, and film and television production. It is a popular tourist destination with an average year-round temperature of 75.5°F (24.2°C) and 3,000 hours of sunshine annually. In 2018, Greater Fort Lauderdale, which includes all of Broward County, welcomed over 13 million overnight visitors. The city's Port Everglades, one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, sees nearly four million cruise passengers annually. Fort Lauderdale is also renowned as the "yachting capital of the world," with over 50,000 registered yachts and 100 marinas.

Visit Lauderdale is the Official Tourism Marketing Agency for Broward County, Florida.
Created by the Board of Broward County Commissioners in 1987, Visit Lauderdale—previously known as the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (GFLCVB)—is a governmental agency funded by a portion of the hotel room tax. The Visit Lauderdale team promotes the Greater Fort Lauderdale as a premier year-round leisure and meeting destination.
