On September 3, 1988, during an episode of Nickelodeon's "Total Panic", "Weird Al" Yankovic experienced the newly unveiled "Earthquake: The Big One" attraction on the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Studio Tour tram at Universal Studios Hollywood rolls into Stage 50, famously dubbed "the world's only split-level soundstage." As the tram enters, a calm atmosphere prevails because the film crew is taking a lunch break—until the ground suddenly starts shaking.

The Earthquake attraction is built to mimic a massive earthquake, rated 8.3 on the Richter scale, set inside a soundstage that resembles a San Francisco subway station. In this “hot set”—a film set that remains intact for future shoots—the experience features a variety of exciting effects. Guests encounter a gimbal that rocks the tram, a gasoline truck crashing through the ceiling, fire and spark effects generated by Tesla coils, a subway train derailing, and even a colossal 60,000-gallon water flood. Remarkably, the attraction resets itself in just 15 seconds after each simulation to welcome the next group of visitors.

Interestingly, actual earthquakes have twice forced the attraction to shut down. The first incident happened on October 17, 1989—just seven months after the attraction’s debut—following the Loma Prieta earthquake in Northern California. The second shutdown occurred on June 28, 1992, when a quake prompted a 24-hour closure for safety inspections.

It is important to note that the attraction has never featured live performers besides video marketing segments. Built-in 1988, Earthquake: The Big One replaced the Tower of London set that once stood in its place. Stage 50 was constructed exclusively for this attraction and is not used for regular film productions on the Universal Studios lot. However, it has been featured in several movies and television shows.

The Studio Tour—also known as The Backlot Tour—is a signature ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, located in Universal City, California, near Los Angeles. As the park’s flagship experience, it provides visitors with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at an active film studio, showcasing a variety of film sets from the Universal Studios Lot. In recent years, guests have been transported in multi-car trams for the entire journey. The tour typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is narrated by a live tour guide, whose commentary can be seen on video monitors installed throughout the tram.

Visitors pass through distinct areas throughout the tour, including the Front Lot, Backlot, and several other attractions. The experience offers rare glimpses of authentic sets and props used in famous movies, iconic filming locations, and unique memorabilia from a wide range of films.

"Weird Al" Yankovic is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and parodist who has carved out a unique niche in popular culture through his clever musical spoofs and satirical humor. Beginning his career in the late 1970s, he quickly gained attention for his ability to transform well-known hit songs into humorous parodies that both honor and poke fun at the originals. His signature style involves taking popular tunes—such as Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and Madonna's "Like a Virgin"—and reimagining them with witty, offbeat lyrics that often reflect the absurdities of modern life. Beyond his parodies, Weird Al has also earned acclaim for his inventive polka medleys, which creatively mash-up snippets of current hits into playful, energetic performances that showcase his deep knowledge of the music scene.
