KTTV Channel 11's My Fox Reporter Jane Yamamoto covers the shutdown of Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. Fox 11 anchor John Beard introduces the story.

In the early 2000s, the popularity of Back to the Future: The Ride waned, prompting Universal to update attractions with newer franchises. 2006 Universal Florida announced the ride’s closure, which concluded in 2007. The Hollywood location closed on September 3, 2007, with a special event featuring Christopher Lloyd and a contest to win a 1981 DeLorean.

Universal replaced the ride with The Simpsons Ride, debuting in Florida on May 15, 2008, and in Hollywood four days later. The new attraction includes nods to the original ride, such as themed construction walls and a humorous queue video featuring Doc Brown. In Japan, the ride closed on May 31, 2016, and was succeeded by Despicable Me Minion Mayhem in April 2017.

About
Back to the Future: The Ride was a simulator attraction available at multiple Universal Destinations & Experiences locations. The inaugural version opened on May 2, 1991, in the World Expo section of Universal Studios Florida in Orlando, Florida. A second version launched on June 12, 1993, in the Hollywood Lot area of Universal Studios Hollywood in Universal City, California. The third installation debuted on March 31, 2001, in the San Francisco area of Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Japan. Inspired by the Back to the Future franchise, the ride offers a first-person adventure set after the events of Back to the Future Part III, where riders participate in a time-traveling chase to catch Biff Tannen, who has stolen the DeLorean time machine.

Steven Spielberg served as the ride’s creative consultant, aiming to replicate the success of Disneyland’s Star Tours ride. Due to declining popularity in the early 2000s, the ride was eventually closed in 2007, although the Universal Studios Japan version continued operating until 2016. The Simpsons Ride replaced Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida, while Despicable Me Minion Mayhem took its place at Universal Studios Japan.
