ABOUT
"Popular" is a song from the Tony Award-winning musical *Wicked*, performed by Kristin Chenoweth as the original Broadway Glinda on the cast recording. In the song, Glinda, the popular girl, attempts to teach her less popular roommate, Elphaba, the ways of social acceptance.

Written by Stephen Schwartz for *Wicked*'s first act in 2003, the song features Glinda's humorous efforts to mold Elphaba into an image of conventional beauty and popularity. Schwartz envisioned Glinda as a quintessential high school cheerleader — the popular blonde who dated the football captain and was crowned homecoming queen. He has likened *Popular* to the teen satire of the film *Clueless*.

In "Popular," Glinda coaches Elphaba on fitting in, with Schwartz crafting intentionally superficial lyrics that he describes as “empty calories.” The song, distinguished by its bubblegum pop sound influenced by the Beatles, stands out from the rest of the musical.
