ABOUT
In "The Wizard and I," the recurring "Unlimited" theme appears throughout the musical. In this song, Elphaba envisions a grand celebration across Oz in her honor, unaware that it will actually mark her "death" at the story's end after Dorothy "melts" her. Ironically, Elphaba even sings about being "so happy I could melt." She also imagines that "when people see me, they will scream" from admiration rather than fear. As the song reaches its peak, she proclaims she will be at the heart of a "celebration throughout Oz," foreshadowing the opening scene. The word "good" is repeated several times in the lyrics.

Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It draws inspiration from Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a creative reimagining of L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz* and its 1939 film adaptation. The musical unfolds from the perspectives of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, exploring their friendship before and after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz. It delves into the complexities of their bond as Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West and Galinda transforms into Glinda the Good. Their relationship is marked by contrasting personalities, clashing ideals, a shared romantic interest, responses to the Wizard’s corrupt reign, and ultimately, Elphaba’s tragic downfall.

Produced by Universal Stage Productions, along with producers Marc Platt, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone, and helmed by director Joe Mantello with choreography by Wayne Cilento, *Wicked* opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003 following tryouts at San Francisco's Curran Theatre earlier that year. Its original cast featured Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard.
