Universal Studios needed a lively and engaging route for visitors between the studio tour, cinemas, and theater. Jerde's design delivered much more. Universal CityWalk transformed the concept of an urban village into a vibrant mix of entertainment, services, and attractions. It serves as part entertainment district, urban street, tourist destination, and shopping hub, attracting 25,000 visitors daily. Cinema attendance has surged by 60%, and studio tour participation is up 15%. Although initially envisioned as a tourist hotspot, CityWalk has also become a local favorite, contributing to 67% of sales. Despite commanding the highest rents in the area, CityWalk maintains a 98% occupancy rate. With annual sales averaging over $800 per square foot—nearly three times the national average for regional malls—this success is no surprise.

About the water feature
In 1993, WET [Design] partnered with The Jerde Partnership International Inc. to create the Universal CityWalk water feature in Universal City. In 2016, WET renovated and enhanced two of the three original installations.

One feature, Chrome, showcases a mesmerizing display of water plumes that shimmer in mid-air, pulsing in intricately choreographed patterns and sequences. Set in a radial grid that spreads outward in CityWalk’s Fountain Court, the water display incorporates programmable fog and dramatic, color-changing lights.

The interactive water jets create ever-changing patterns, constantly evolving with unexpected shifts. Pathways and walls emerge and vanish again as jets shoot through a misty veil, providing endless surprises for children. They eagerly chase the water, running through the jets and trying to predict where the next burst will appear.

At night, Chrome transforms into a dazzling chromatic display. The water erupts in vibrant colors, with the choreography evoking various moods and characters.
